The vacuum interrupter is deceptively simple. A typical cross-section. The contacts are enclosed in a vacuum chamber originally manufactured from glass, but later from a high alumina ceramic. The contacts are closed by a mechanism connected to the moving terminal. The moving terminal is connected to the vacuum chamber by a stainless steel bellows that permits the contacts to open and close while maintaining the vacuum. Typical vacuum levels inside the device are about 10.4 Pa (10.6 mbar).
