Although I have been interested in electromagnetics my entire adult life, my concentration on applied electrostatics and electrostatic discharge began in graduate school. During this time, I was introduced by Walter L. Weeks, Ph.D. (Purdue University) and Ed C. Escallon (Terronics Development Corporation), to a fascinating research project on electrostatic spraying. A consequence of this introduction is that I dedicated nearly 4 years to researching a project on this topic and to learning everything I could about applied electrostatics. While experimenting using kV-level voltages during my research, I had an enjoyable time and developed the proper respect for electrostatic discharges. After reading this book, it will become apparent why electrostatics is not only a fun field but also an important field. The electrostatic discharge related topics contained in this book were selected from my previously published reference and textbook published by CRC Press entitled Electromagnetic Compatibility Handbook. I hope this “spinoff” book, being only a small fraction of the Handbook , can be more convenientlyused and more easily owned by individuals interested mainly in electrostatic discharge.
