War is generally regarded as the province of men, both as brokers and as combatants. The role of women has been a footnote--medical and caregiving functions, camp followers, victims. This encyclopedia is a unique source of information on multiple aspects of women's involvement in war, whether as combatants, opponents, resistance fighters, spies, or in support roles.
The nearly 500 alphabetically arranged entries written by 136 predominately North American and European subject experts cover women's experiences in war from antiquity (the Greek, Persian, and Roman empires) to the current conflicts in Iraq and Sudan. The articles range from a partial column for subjects such as World War II resistance-fighter Eva Maria Buch to several pages for topics like United States, home front during World War II. While numerous entries deal with specific women, a considerable number deal with broad topics (Rape in war; Terrorists, women) and historically significant incidents or movements (Islamic resistance movements, women in; Vietnam, women in the Buddhist peace movement) as well as groups or organizations. Articles are clearly written in a style that is, despite the multiple contributors, uniformly readable and accessible. Each entry is followed by see also references as well as a listing of "References for Further Reading," both print and electronic. Sidebars contain primary source material from autobiographical, archival, and press sources. The frequent black-and-white photographs are clearly reproduced and appropriately placed, and they extend the text well. Along with a table of contents, both volumes contain the foreword, the informative introduction, and a "Topic Finder," which is a listing by subject. The second volume contains as well a list of acronyms; a three-page annotated "Select Bibliography" listing works of wider scope on the topic; and a detailed, accurate index.
