fter surveying introductory-level folklore textbooks and course assignments, Watts, a professor of interdisciplinary arts and sciences, has created a useful one-volume folklore encyclopedia for secondary-school through college-level students and general readers who are nonspecialists. Defining American folklore as "transmitted traditional beliefs, myths, tales, language practices, and customs" of people in the U.S., the work contains entries on specific tales, like "The Three Little Pigs," that are familiar in American folklore; American customs or observances, such as anniversaries; specific regions or groups; celebrations, for example, Valentine's Day; general types of narratives, like nursery rhymes; folk legends and fictional characters; artifacts, such as the AIDS Quilt; historical persons, for example, Patrick Henry and Rosa Parks; and authors, such as James Fenimore Cooper and Zora Neale Hurston, who used or modified folk narratives and traditions. Entries are generally one page in length and designed so that the first paragraph provides vital information or a definition, and the body gives particulars and explains the importance of the topic. Each entry has a bibliography of 5 to 10 sources and see also references to other entries. Concluding the volume are a short essay on the starting points for researching folklore, a bibliography, a helpful categorical entry list, and an index. Other works do not have the same type of coverage. Greenwood Library of American Folktales (2006), which was designed for a similar audience, provides access to actual tales and narratives, while Encyclopedia of American Folklore will help users identify and define a topic and locate additional resources.
