From the Preface ...
The Nassau County Interscholastic Mathematics League (NCIML) began to function during the 1955-56 school year with 18 members. Currently the League has 54 participating schools and approximately 600 student Mathletes who take part in six contests during each school year.
The NCIML came into existence primarily due to the efforts of Dr. George Lenchner, who modeled the League after a sister organization in New York City. Today the Nassau League is probably one of the most successful and active groups of its kind in the country. As a result of the an article which appeared in the Mathematics Teacher describing the operation of the NCIML (Lenchner, February 1959) similar groups were organized throughout the nation.

At the September 1973 Coaches’ meeting of the NCIML, the Book Committee was formed to produce The New Mathlete Problem Book containing the League’s problems and sample solutions for the school years 1961-62 to 1973-1974.

We strongly advise the reader to try the problems before reading the solutions or hints; and invite you to submit unusual or interesting solutions to the Chairman of the Book Committee …
