John Rector's debut novel, THE COLD KISS, is a gripping, intimate, and brutal thriller. I was hooked from page one due to the elegant yet stripped down prose, the deft characterization, and the pitch-perfect dialogue. The plot moves with an inexorable momentum to an ending that, I think, readers will see is the perfect conclusion.
The story follows a single storyline, in the best noir tradition, focusing on Nate and Sarah, two young lovers trying to escape their past and start a new beginning. Nate has a checkered past and Sarah is pregnant. While on the road, they pick up a man who offers them $500 to take him to Reno, and they accept, needing the money. Meanwhile, it's the blizzard of a century. The man dies, he's holding a cool million, and Nate sees an opportunity to change their lives. All this is outlined in Amazon's synopsis. What's remarkable about the story is the sense of sinking desperation, inevitability, as they get snowed in at a cheap little motel and things continue to go wrong. Each event has the weight of blocks falling into place, the pitch of a kettle screaming on a stove. The story is pregnant with incipient violence.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. My favorite of 2010.
