Nothing is ever static when it comes to infectious disease. Bacteria are able to reproduce incredibly quickly—as fast as within 20 minutes under ideal circumstances. This reproduction is never quite perfect. Each generation of bacteria may go through mutations (inheritable changes) in its DNA, changing the new generation slightly from its parent population of bacteria. These mutations may be harmful, beneficial, or neutral. They may be changes in single nucleotides of the DNA code (the chemicals that make up the DNA chain) or they may be large additions or removals of pieces of DNA. In some cases, a bacterium may even acquire a large chunk of DNA that carries virulence genes (genes that help make a bacterium cause disease) or even antibiotic resistance, allowing the bacterium to grow even in the presence of drugs that would typically kill it.
