Campylobacter is one of the leading causes of sporadic bacterial diarrheal illness in the United States. It is estimated to cause approximately 2.4 million cases per year, which is more than Shigella and Salmonella bacteria combined. Anyone can contract campylobacteriosis, but children under 5 years of age and young adults aged 15 to 29 years are most often afflicted. Emma and the County Environmental Services Department staff deduced that the source of her and David’s illness was probably the chicken they prepared for their Sunday dinner the weekend before they got sick. Emma grilled the chicken while David prepared the salad. Though the chicken was probably cooked properly because Emma remembered that she had overcooked it, the investigator asserted that cross-contamination was the problem.
