Maybe it's just me, but I really liked this book. It wasn't your typical romance and I think that's why I liked it so much. I may have to dock some points for it not being fully committed to being a romantic-suspense. I like the idea of having more suspenseful elements and intrigue in a historical romance, but I felt Foley could have added a bit more of the "suspense" elements and solidified that as the genre she was writing in. Since the romance did solidify somewhat quickly, I think she could have used that extra time to flesh out the climax of the Order of St. Micheal plot. It seems kind of lost in the in-between as it stands now. The ending also wrapped up a bit too fast for me, but overall I really did like the book. I was entertained by it and enjoyed all the characters. It's definitely different from other cookie-cutter historicals, but after reading more of those than I care to count, it was a refreshing change.
