This encyclopedia, edited by Kurian, a prolific packager of standard reference works from CQ Press, Facts On File, and other reference publishers, is promoted by the publisher as "an extensive overhaul" of Encyclopedia of the World's Nations, published in 2002.
Instead of the regional organization found in Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations (p.104), arrangement is alphabetical by country. There are three new entries (for East Timor, Federated States of Micronesia, and Marshall Islands), bringing the total number of countries to 193. Each entry begins with a "Basic Fact Sheet" (head of state, capital, area, religion, national holidays, and so forth) and a large black-and-white political map. Unlike with some of the competing world survey sources of this type, the maps here are uncluttered and very easy on the eyes. The main body of each uniformly arranged entry consists of more than 20 clearly labeled subsections. These include both the usual, such as "Geographical Features," "Political Parties," "Foreign Policy," and "Economy," plus new sections on culture-related topics such as "Folklore and Mythology," "Etiquette," "Family Life," and "Personal Appearance." Information carried over from the previous edition has been updated, although an error noted in our review of that edition concerning the independence date for Qatar is still here.
The decision to spend several hundred dollars for a source like this has to include consideration of the various free Web-based alternatives. Even a superficial Google search by name of country will link students to Web sites such as the CIA's World Factbook [https://cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/bx.html] and the State Department's Background Notes[http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/].
In addition, the online sites are updated very frequently, a feature obviously impossible with a print source. The trade-off in favor of maintaining on the shelf at least one good-quality, print country survey is reliability of access. Assuming the book isn't misshelved,^B infested by bugs, or vandalized, it is always ready to go.
Any library wishing to provide on-demand access to this type of information, especially for students, is well advised to consider Encyclopedia of the World's Nations and Cultures. The price for these four nicely bound, well-designed, user-friendly volumes is not unreasonable.
