In addition to more than 140 new articles, most of the original 400 first edition articles have been updated for the second edition to reflect, for example, advances in our understanding of corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) and urocortin receptors, ideas about the role of central CRF in the overall control of the psychological/mental as well as neuroendocrine response to stress, and the novel discoveries of the complex neuropeptide regulation of hunger and satiety. The effects of maternal and perinatal stress on subsequent body development and function in the adult, the adverse effects of stress on brain (and particularly hippocampal memory function), the role of the amygdala in fear and aggression, and the role of stress in the etiology of obesity and the metabolic syndrome all feature prominently in this new edition.
