Much about infectious diseases has changed in the modern era, with the availability of vaccines, antimicrobial therapy and other interventions; however, much remains eerily familiar. We still face the unpredictable appearance of new diseases such as SARS, H5N1 avian influenza, and HIV/AIDS.
