When you think of a truly great team, what comes to mind? Every so often a Branch Rickey comes along to build the first farm system for the St. Louis Cardinals, then move to Brooklyn and do the same thing for the Dodgers, then integrate the game, changing pro- fessional baseball (and American sports) forever. Those were long-range goals involving vision, planning, investment, risk, and careful execution. But for every Rickey taking the long view, we have a hundred Lombardis who believe that winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.
