In astrophysics we assume that the laws of physics, obtained in general by studying local (atomic, nuclear, etc.) phenomena, are applicable, by extrapolation, to the whole universe. With this hypothesis, we proceed as far as possible in the analysis of the "global behaviour" of the universe.
In this "global behaviour", two related phenomena seem to play a very important role: stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis. The observable universe is neatly divided into a great number of galaxies, and each galaxy contains a great number of stars. These stars are born, live and die. A mass of gas becomes isolated, condensed onto itself, irreversibly transformed by the action of the interactions of physics, then returned (at least partially) to the galactic interstellar gas. The cycle starts again, and each cycle leaves its mark on the aspect of the galaxy. The galaxy becomes older.
In these lectures, we wish to study these two phenomena in detail, and try to determine the individual role of each of the interactions of physics, then the role of various groups of elementary particles in stellar, nucleosynthetic and galactic evolution.
The next step would be the study of the role of galactic evolution in the evolution of the universe. We know almost nothing about this question. It is the new field of study which astrophysics is already preparing to tackle.
