Werewolves. How difficult these classic creatures of ancient folklore are to place in our modern world. The fact is, from around the 80s onwards, the werewolf has suffered from such endless, unimaginative 're-inventions' that one even wonders if it's possible to come across any modern tales that might inject the hairy monsters of old with the sense of menace and horror they once possessed. After all... we now live in the age of 'Twilight' where the most unpleasant side of the 'curse' for our monsters is that their hairy conditions might scare away the girls they fall for. It's enough to start to lose faith. That is... until you read something like 'Wolf Hunt' Over the course of this short horror/dark comedy novel Jeff Strand drags the ancient myth of the Wolfman into our present and, page after page, chapter after chapter, gleefully catalogues the blood-soaked, frenzied carnage that ensues. The plot, focusing on a pair of professional and well-meaning 'thugs for hire' who spectacularly fumble the task of babysitting a captive werewolf, is so compellingly executed and breathtakingly paced that putting the book down is damn near impossible. The dialogue too is a pleasure to read, as are the frequent action-packed moments of panic, mayhem and horror as the protaganists are thrown deeper and deeper into a series of twisted scenarios. Even more brilliantly, the whole novel is alive with some of the darkest, blackest humour you will ever read. As a result, this is a book that almost anyone will find something to enjoy about. After all is said and done though, it's Ivan the Werewolf who steals the show and lifts this novel from a ' very good' read indeed to something really, truly special. Do not be under any illusion... this werewolf is a total monster. Not since Eddie Quist graced the screens in the retelling of Gary Brandner's 'The Howling' has modern fiction been given such a deranged, sadistic and utterly repellent version of a lycanthrope. It's absolutely thrilling stuff. Combining moments of gut-wrenching horror with devilish black humour Jeff Strand has brought us a modern werewolf masterpiece with few, if any, equals. In a nutshell... do not miss this.
