Ms. Oates is an excellent writer; she fastidiously delves into the personalities of each of the Mulvaneys. I get to know them as people. Michael, Sr., for example, is a deeply flawed as the result of alcoholism and other psychological and physical problems. However, I never found the book boring or tedious to read. My only problem with the book is the author's attempt to tie everything together too nicely and too neatly by its end. Also, Ms. Oates's tends to mire the plot in sentimentality. She also lets the father get off the hook too easily regarding his horrible attitude toward his daughter. I just could not buy that "it was just something that happened...and "no one knows how to fix it."
