The first five of these essays are semi-popular pieces on logic and the foundations of mathematics. The other sixteen are visibly philosophical in concern. Some of these proceed in unbroken English; others break into logical symbols, but only restrainedly, requiring no preparation external to the book.
The 21 essays span thirty years. Other essays of those decades, treating of related philosophical themes, have already found their way in whole or part into From a Logical Point of View and Word and Object.
This book, then, will tend in its philosophical portions to complement those two, though not depending on them.
The essays are arranged by subject matter. The five essentially logical ones are followed by two early pieces relating logic to the question what there is, and two essays on necessary or logical truth. Then come five polemical essays on the foregoing topics and other topics in the philosophy of logic. Among these the terminal topic is modal logic, and it has logical links with the topic of the next essay: the logic of belief and other propositional attitudes. Then come two recent papers on the philosophical consequences of the Lowenheim-Skolem theorem. The book ends in an expansive mood, with an essay on the status of mental entities and three on science and reality.
