We Are Holding the President Hostage
Aging Mafia Don Salvatore Padronelli is furious when fanatical Islamic terrorists capture his beloved daughter and grandson on a trip to Egypt. Fed up with ineffective diplomatic measures and a lack of governmental action, the Don and his loyal henchman cleverly insinuate themselves into the White House posing as waiters at a State dinner and take the President and his wife hostage. Now the Don calls the shots.
This classic confrontation between two men on utterly opposite sides of the law is laced with humor and illustrates how fierce paternal love can motivate even the most ruthless of gangsters into reckless acts of courage and bravery.
Summary: The mafia takes on the terrorists in dated novel.
Rating: 3
In Warren Adler's "We Are Holding the President Hostage", we see things are they were in the mid-80s: geopolitical games with the Soviet Union, the decline of the Mafioso, Lebanon a hotspot for terrorism(hostage taking). In Egypt, a terrorist trys to take a high ranking American official hostage, but the plan is botched and he kidnaps a bystanding American mother and her young child. Little did any know the chain of events that would set off, for the terrorist has the only daughter and grandchild of a powerful Don, who will stop at nothing to have her returned safely. The Don recruits a few loyal men to effect a bold plan: take the President hostage, and force him to go to the mattresses against the terrorists. Some interesting geopolitical manuevering is done, and very good climax. The cliches bring down the novel though, but it was interesting to see the Soviets save the day here.

The Henderson Equation
The people who run the influential newspaper the Washington Chronicle have just exposed and brought down a President with their investigative reporting. Flushed with power, they now attempt to create their own choice for Chief Executive. Clashing relationships within the media and in the political arena reveal the motives, insecurities, and thirst for ascendancy between rival factions fighting for power.
With rich emotional characterizations, this story tears away the curtain from the spin-doctors and sinister figures that populate the corridors of power in the nation's capital. Here is the ultimate Washington insider novel that reveals the machinations of a media that will stop at nothing to achieve power and influence over the political agenda.
Summary: The power of the word.
Rating: 3
"The Henderson Equation" is a novel about the power of the media. It dares to ask if the media goes too far in its quest to find the truth. Should the media try to bring down a President? Written a few years after Watergate, this is a daring novel, but one that ends up falling flat. Nick Gold is an intriging character, with his ideas about being a Keeper of the Word. Its portrayal of a newsroom is interesting, and the Katherine Graham-like owner is also interesting.

Trans-Siberian Express
Famous American cancer specialist Dr. Alex Cousins is sent by the President of the United States to Russia to prolong the life of the Secretary General of the Politburo. While in Russia, Cousins learns that the Soviets plan to attack China. In an attempt to silence him, the Soviets send Cousins home via the Trans-Siberian Express, the world's longest and most exotic train ride. A beautiful KGB Agent has been ordered to keep him under surveillance until the trip is over. Soon Cousins and the Soviet agent transcend their political differences and fall desperately in love.
This powerful love story, full of intrigue, will keep the reader transfixed and absorbed as the Trans-Siberian Express speeds its way across the vastness of Siberia.
Summary: An Intriguing Journey
Rating: 3
"Trans-Siberian Express" is an early Warren Adler novel, but it is a fine novel. It tells the story of an American doctor, Dr. Alex Cousins, and his internal conflict, while on a train with a memorable cast of characters. On the train is a beautiful KGB agent that Dr. Cousins will fall for; a former Gulag inmate looking for revenge; an ambitious KGB agent who will resort to murder to get what he wants; a Jew trying to start over; and a general awaiting orders. This story reminds us that both sides fear nuclear attack, and that the Russians were not all alike. It is an impressive journey and a fine romance.
