The objective of the Venus International Reference Atmosphere (VIRA) was to produce a concise, descriptive document summarizing the physical properties of the atmosphere of Venus, which by then had been extensively observed by instruments on board the Venera and Pioneer space probes and about which there had been comprehensive, as well as extensive, publications. This document is divided into seven chapters, covering the structure below 100 km, circulation, particulate matter, structure and composition of the upper atmosphere, composition below the homopause, solar and thermal radiation balance, and the ionosphere and solar wind interaction.
