In 1994 the React label (now Resist) released the first Cafe Del Mar album, a timeless collection of chilled Balearic grooves fusing soul, jazz, classical, Hispanic and World music flavours to create a truly unique play list.
Cafe Del Mar, Ibiza Volumen Uno became not only the first Ibiza album to be released but more importantly the first chill out/lounge CD, setting a trend that has sparked people's enthusiasm for over a decade. The celebrated compilation was the brainchild of Ibiza's spiritual father of chill out, Jose Padilla. A DJ who is famed for perfecting the emotionally charged sunset session at the legendary cafe bar and now 10 years later, Jose revisits his spiritual roots with the release of Cafe Solo, a double CD tribute to Balearic music and beyond, contemporary and classic.
Jose Padilla: Cafe Solo is Resist's first foray into the perennially popular chilled music scene since shelving the long running Real Ibiza series of compilations and reflects the current interest in all things down-tempo as highlighted by the runaway success of music festivals The Big Chill and Bestival. The album delivers a diverse and rich musical content, which meant Jose has eschewed DJ mixing Cafe Solo in favour of carefully sequencing the album to create a coherent musical feel and flow.
This also appeases the multitude of eclectic DJ's and crate diggers who have requested unmixed copies of the tracks, that are unavailable elsewhere. It is also makes the perfect album for for summer listening at home or abroad. CD1 takes a more ecletic vibe in a more chillout direction with tracks from Bibel Giberto, Elevator Suite and even Jean Michel Jarre. CD2 on the other hand takes a more cutting edge route, with some fantastic contemporary tracks from the likes of nu-disco producer Daniel Wang and Kompakt heros Closer Musik, Justus Kohncke and Rosin Murphy rubbing shoulders alongside classics by Yellow Magic Orchestra and Peter Green.
Following the success of the first 3 Cafe Del Mar albums on React, Jose recorded his first artist for the label, however "Souvenir" ended up being released by Manifesto/Universal who also went on to release the following Cafe Del Mar albums with Volumen Seis selling in excess of 1 million units. Jose's Latin Grammy (Best Instrumental) nominated follow-up, the half a million-selling "Navigator" was released on Maverick in the U.S. following Madonna's enthusiasm for the Cafe Del Mar albums - she was quoted in Billboard as saying "they would be the perfect soundtrack for a desert island." More recently Jose compiled a CD for the uber-cool Paris restaurant Man Ray and an album for Warner Music Spain entitled Bella Musica.
