The illustrated history of creation U.S.Submarines after 1945
Intense debate is currently focused on the future of U.S. submarines. This book is intended partly as a contribution to that debate, in the belief that an understanding of the past is necessary to make wise decisions about the future. Clearly, any account of the evolution of the present U.S. submarine force must arouse questions of security. Submarines are valuable because they are stealthy; it is natural to feel that technical revelations must compromise stealth. Although similar considerations apply to many ships and weapons, security seems particularly important in undersea warfare where the margin between survival and disaster is quite narrow. For example, many people believe that, early in World War II (WW II), a reporter's offhand comment about the Japanese setting depth charges too shallow led them to correct their settings and thus kill American submariners.
Security rules are indeed tight, and the reader should not construe this book as a relaxation of the rules. I was able to write the book only because much of the relevant data has leaked out over time. I avoid references to concepts and systems that have not been revealed elsewhere. It is possible to lay out the main lines of development, as well as the essential logic, of the submarine force. Also, it is possible to describe many of the different alternatives to the ships actually built that were discarded along the way. The variety attests to the continuing vigor and creativity of the submarine community.
This book does not represent a change in U.S. Navy security policy. Speeds above 20 kts, diving depths below 400 ft, and nuclear horsepowers are all classified. Many significant figures have appeared in unclassified or declassified publications or in unofficial publications whose content is clearly plausible. I have used those data. I do not reveal figures thus far unpublished, nor have such figures been released in order to be part of this book. Often, I rely on standard published (and therefore unofficial) sources and tend to use figures common to the major handbooks.
