This was my first Lisa Black novel, and it was a fairly enjoyable experience. Clearly comfortable with her main characters after previous adventures, Black gets into the action straight away, leaving those of us new to her world a little behind in figuring out all the relationship ins-and-outs. But by the one-third mark, I felt fully up to speed. That said, the one-third mark should have been the half-way point, in my opinion. At nearly 400 pages, this murder mystery is too long with far too many details regarding the Cleveland train system, both in the 1930s and today.
That said, the novel is at its strongest in following its dual, equally rich narratives as detectives rush to solve murder sprees in the 1930s and the present day, and the fact that they are somehow mysteriously connected makes the guessing game all the more exciting. Though I long predicted the outcome--as should any avid mystery reader--it was a fun ride and worth recommending. The comparisons between investigative methods over the 75-year period was really quite interesting as were the descriptions of the police corruption, labor shortages, and overt racism of the Great Depression, making the period section come to life almost more vividly than the story set in the present. I also appreciate the addition of a bibliography for those interested in the real facts behind the Torso murders and the time period.
I subtract one star because there were places when the narrative(s) plodded along with far too much descriptive detail. A minor complaint, to be sure, but I would have enjoyed the novel even more if it had been a bit tighter.
