The investigation of indoor air quality has shown that microbial contamination is often a problem in buildings. Water damage or dampness in buildings has been associated with respiratory diseases. Recent evidence indicates that fungi are often an essential part of the picture. However, in comparison to other areas of medicine, very few toxicology studies of exposure to fungi have been conducted. (1 > 3)- ? - Glucans are cell wall components of fungi. They have been considered surrogate compounds to monitor environmental exposure to fungi. Although (1 > 3)- ? -glucans have been studied for some time, most of the previous literature has focused on the beneficial effects of (1 > 3)- ? -glucans rather than on their toxicological effects. Consequently, not much toxicology data are available to investigators of indoor air issues. Therefore, we feel that it is important to summarize current knowledge concerning the toxicological effects of (1 > 3)- ? -glucans in the hope that it may inspire more research in this area. This book, Toxicology of (1 > 3)- ? -Glucans , intends to provide a comprehensive review by experts of current information regarding the effects of the fungal cell wall component (1 > 3)- ? -glucan on human health.
