This book is an introduction to general and algebraic topology. Only some facts from elementary mathematics are assumed to be known. The necessary fundamental concepts from set theory are collected in an Appendix. Further auxiliary material is always introduced in the text when it is first used. The auxiliary material from group theory needed in Parts III and IV is developed in the relevant context.
Parts I and II concern themselves with general topology. For terminology I have followed the fundamental presentation of Bourbaki,| which is suggested for further guidance. Parts III and IV lead into algebraic topology, where at the same time we will consider cell complexes (CW-complexes), because of their importance. Part IV ends where it becomes necessary to introduce the methods of homological algebra. Emphasis was placed on establishing the connections with existing monographs. References are restricted to a choice of books for further reading.
