Product Description:
This is the long-awaited update on the bestselling book that offers a practical, accessible reference manual for faculty in any discipline. This new edition contains up-to-date information on technology as well as expanding on the ideas and strategies presented in the first edition. It includes more than sixty-one chapters designed to improve the teaching of beginning, mid-career, or senior faculty members. The topics cover both traditional tasks of teaching as well as broader concerns, such as diversity and inclusion in the classroom and technology in educational settings.
Summary: Excellent Tool!
Rating: 5
Basic but thorough instruction for the new teacher. It is my Bible because it contains helpful information regarding most aspects of a teaching position.
Summary: A Teaching Encyclopedia
Rating: 4
The book by Davis is more of an encyclopedia. It is a reference manual for teachers, and includes an exhaustive list of anything you ever wanted to know about teaching a class. However, the coverage of each topic is extremely brief, and typically limited to a small paragraph of 3-4 sentences. It is a very good guide, but outside reading would be required to fully answer questions many new teachers may have.
Summary: How to Teach a University Course
Rating: 5
This book clearly shows how to successfully teach a university course. Teachers with no experience can use it to keep their heads above water, while those with experience can learn a trick or three and sharpen their skills or dig themselves out of a teaching rut.
Preparing, syllabuses, classroom instruction, dealing with GSIs, and much more are discussed, as well as using newer technology, including RSS and instant messaging. The book is based off of research and has a thorough bibliography for digging deeper.
