Timber Press Pocket Guide to Japanese Maples (Timber Press Pocket Guides) By J. D. Vertrees, Peter Gregory * Publisher: Timber Press, Incorporated * Number Of Pages: 224 * Publication Date: 2007-04-01 * ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0881927996 * ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780881927993 Product Description: The Timber Press Pocket Guide to Japanese Maples describes and illustrates 300 of the most widely available Japanese maples in North America and Europe. Along with basic information on cultivation and maintenance, it provides lists of trees for specific landscape uses, enabling gardeners to select the best trees for various garden conditions. Fifty newer cultivars are presented, including four outstanding trees that are expected to become very popular in the near future. The guide is a valuable complement to the 3rd edition of J. D. Vertrees' Japanese Maples (updated in 2001 by Peter Gregory). Its handy format makes it an ideal reference for taking to the nursery or garden center. About the Author Peter Gregory, retired manager of the world-famous Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire, England, has researched maples and other trees for more than 40 years. He has continued his studies of maples since his retirement, becoming Chairman of the international Maple Society, which he helped found in 1990, and Editor of the Society's quarterly journal. He is recognized internationally as one of the leading authorities in all aspects of maples. J. D. Vertrees (1915 1993) was an entomologist, nurseryman, and educator who collected rare and unusual maples. At one time, his 1?-acre arboretum at Maplewood Nursery in Roseburg, Oregon, had the largest collection of Japanese maples in the United States. He amassed an impressive list of awards during his lifetime, including a Citation for Horticulture Research from the American Horticultural Society, a Special Achievement Award from the Oregon Association of Nurserymen, and the 1980 Thomas Roland Gold Medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. In 1997, Japanese Maples was selected by the American Horticultural Society as one of the 75 Great American Garden Books. Summary: Very pleased Rating: 4 For such a small book it had great information and wonderfully clear pictures. I work in a nursery and use this book as an aid to show customers how the mature trees will look. It has come in handy along with the other Timber Press Pocket Guides!!! Love it. Summary: No more embarrassing mistakes! Rating: 5 A great resource for home gardeners and professionals alike. No more making impulse purchases and then discovering the cute 5' sapling will grow to a 30' monster in 5 years! The section on 'Japanese maples for specific purposes and locations' is particularly helpful for designers looking for that 'perfect' tree. I wish I had bought two; one for home and one for the car! Summary: a must for the price Rating: 4 this is a must for maple enthousiasts. it has plenty of pictures and descriptions, for the price you will not find better. what I missed is a chapter about pests and diseases of these trees. what is very good is a specific chapter where you can find the different species sorted by color, size, autumn color ... Summary: OHHHHH So Happy! Rating: 5 I was pleased with the whole turnaround time and the quality of the book is wonderful. The book is a pure delight for anyone who loves Japanese Maples. Summary: Terrific, well put together little resource guide! Rating: 5 Excellent resource for identifying maples' leaves, colors, sizes, groups, etc. Nice size and feel to the book.
