These guys never slow down; the Lexington, Kentucky/D.C. songwriting machine known as These United States amazingly drop 'What Lasts' on July 20th, their 4th LP in 2 years.
A deeper, darker disc this time around, the bands patented blend of alt-country meets psyche-folk pop meets old fashioned rocknroll becomes a little more introspective and moody, taking on themes of loss, perennial life on the road and frontman Jesse Elliot's own near death experience (i.e. drowning in Lake Michigan).
One of the more electic bands out there right now, These United States offer Americana, country rock, roots, blues, rocknroll, garage, psyche-folk and even a hint of subtle jazz on 'What Lasts', with Elliot's raspy voice guiding the way through clever, charming, sometimes tragic stories. The pedal steel seldom sounds better then when matched with these songs, and even though the bulk of this disc is a little more tame than previous work, there are still plenty of rowdy moments and the band clearly prove that they can slow down the tempo to a faint pulse while still keeping the listener enthralled.
There's a reason these guy can put out so many discs in a short time to critical acclaim and play 500+ shows in 3 years; they are really, really good at what they do. As essential as anything in their ever expanding catalog, a must for fans and a good a place as any to start for the first time listener.
