One of the things which was missing when I was starting out in my career as a theatre consultant was a comprehensive book, in English, about stage engineering. While there were a number of works in German, it was a well-illustrated book published by a then major stage engineering contractor, Maschinenfabrik Wiesbaden GmbH, in English and called Deus Ex Machina, which really gave me a start. But after that, not being able to read technical German easily, 1 had to travel extensively and study the installations in actual theatres in order to understand and learn some of the techniques in use at the time.
