The journey is, by far, the most riveting aspect of this tale. At one point, the large group is separated in a battle and three smaller bands must go on alone in an attempt to reconnect at a future point. For me, this middle section is handled with precision. The character development draws us in as the leads struggle with bigger meanings to the trip and their place in it. But the exploits are exciting, sad, and comical by turns. In weaving these three disparate paths together (and I loved all three), "The Unremembered" reaches new heights--I almost didn't want to see the band reunited! Along the way, they pick up new allies as well as new foes. There are moments of tenderness and of horror--times of adversity and of triumph. Seriously, the bulk of Orullian's tale had me absolutely captivated.
The resolution lacked a bit of punch for me but certainly sets the stage for a continuation. But nevertheless, I think this debut succeeds quite well. The primary reason for this is that amidst all the tumult and fantasy, it is easy to identify with and believe in the protagonists. As they wrestle with the weighty moral implications of their actions, I never lost interest in their struggle. I enjoyed this volume as a character study just as much as anything else. But there were plenty of laughs, sufficient intrigue, solid action set pieces, and moments of horror along the way. I don't know that "The Unremembered" necessarily defines a new classic--but this is a solidly entertaining debut that holds much promise for future chapters.
