John had been kneeling for hours. His hair was matted to his head and his face had the grey craggy look of a man that hadn't eaten or slept in days.
There were no windows, and the air was filled with the smell of mildew and stale smoke. John's room was empty except for a rickety wooden cot and a small table standing next to it. A flickering candle splattered the walls with yellow light from its precarious perch on the edge of the table.
The cold winter air sliced through the room and John’s body with surgical ambivalence and precision. Brown sackcloth loosely wrapped around his body and tied at the waist with a frayed rope was his only shield against the cold. It gaped open below his waist and the cold penetrated to his core. His groin ached from the cold, and his legs had cramped up hours earlier.
He ignored the pain. He understood that pain and suffering were part of religion,
and he believed God would give him the strength to overcome any trial. He held his Bible with both hands.
