The Secret of Shelter Island: Money and What Matters By Alexander Green * Publisher: Wiley * Number Of Pages: 265 * Publication Date: 2009-06-09 * ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0470482281 * ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780470482285 Product Description: Most of us devote a substantial percentage of our waking hours to making, spending and having more. This desire to accumulate is natural. But when a bigger bank balance – or the things it can buy - becomes our animating purpose, disappointment generally follows. In The Secret of Shelter Island, nationally renowned financial analyst and bestselling author Alexander Green explores the complicated relationship we all have with money and reveals the road map to a rich life. The timing could hardly be better. After more than twenty-five years of virtually uninterrupted prosperity, the U.S. economy has hit a rough patch. Yet to the extent that downturns like the current one shake up the status quo and force us to re-examine our goals and priorities, they also offer enormous opportunities. The Secret of Shelter Island provides an ideal starting point. Drawing on some of today’s best minds and many of history’s greatest thinkers, it is both a much-needed source of inspiration and an insightful look at the role of both money and values in the pursuit of the good life. The book is arranged around four central themes. In Part I, "A Rich Mind," Green explores such key questions as: How important is money in your life? What is it giving you? What is it costing you? In Part II, "What’s Most Important," he discusses how to calculate your real net worth—without using a financial statement. In Part III, "Attitudes of Gratitude," he offers powerful insights based on a deceptively simple philosophy of life. In the final section of the book "The Search for Meaning," he delivers a refreshing take on the universal principles that guide us all – or should. The Secret of Shelter Island is full of practical wisdom. More than just a personal philosophy, it is a profound and utterly modern commentary on timeless values, the search for meaning and what it means to be truly wealthy. Summary: Secret to Shelter Island is great Rating: 5 This is the second book by Alexander Green I've read and he addresses a balance and a fullness to life that just working all the time just to make more doesn't fulfill. For someone who's wondering "Is this all there is?" This is eye opening and can be life altering. Summary: perhaps the most meaningful book you'll ever read Rating: 5 If you're looking for a book that will teach you about investing or how to make some money, don't pick up this book. Alexander Green is a fantastic investment advisor, but this book, a compilation of a column he writes, will change your life. It has changed mine. Each short chapter should be read, reread, and taken to heart. Summary: Generalities Rating: 3 Most of the reviews for this book were pretty good so I purchased it. I am a little disappointed because most of the information is very general using a lot of cliches and platitudes. There is very little detail or practical information. If a person is searching for general spiritual philosophy, or not to let money rule you, this may be helpful. For more practical information, there are better books available. Summary: A must read Rating: 5 A great perspective on what is most important in life. Considering that money is not the answer, it is all the more impressive that the author is someone who makes a living by educating people on investments. By the way, Alex is very good at his "regular job" as well. Summary: The Book Everyone Should Read Rating: 5 If you think this book is just about money, think again. Actually it is more about life and how you can be happy with what you have and enjoy life in your current situation. Alex Greens use of historical knowledge from many of the great philosophers helps put many of today's issues in perspective. That's not to say he does not talk about how you can improve your current financial situation, however, by teaching us that the mad pursuit of money is not what will make us happy, he points us in a direction of what the most important things are in life. No matter where you are currently in your life's journey, I think you will benefit from the many insights Alex teaches us about how to lead our lives and make us better people.
