I loved reading this book, which I can see has mixed reviews and much of my book club found it implausible and felt disconnected. But I loved the story about a young beautiful woman, still a teenager struggling to learn about herself, coming from a dysfunctional family (her mother), and then developing a passion for another, the forbidden in the land of which she lives. It was fascinating to learn about Chinese history and some history of communism and how hostile China could be to foreigners. I couldn't get enough of Lydia, her vibrancy for life and was sad when the book ended, but I just got the sequel, The Girl from Junchow, and I can't wait to start reading it!
