“The scientific world has not been overburdened by international meetings devoted to this important endocrine organ, for twenty years separated the first two, and six years the second and third. We have all been very modest and avoided the frequent and frenetic exchanges that characterize some of the more sensational branches of endocrinology. That is not to deny that dramatic advances have occurred in the physiology and biochemistry of the neurohypophysis or their importance to human (and animal) welfare. I hope this meeting will assess these advances and reach a critical judgement of the present state of knowledge. The programme committee have tried to put together a balanced agenda for discussion. But we recognize that such selectivity is bound to be highly subjective, and there must be those who feel we have signally failed in the task by omission of this or that speaker or topic. May I apologize on behalf of myself and my colleagues for these shortcomings and trust that sufficient unscheduled discussion time has been allowed in the programme to cover the more serious gaps.
