The concept is so deceptively simple that one wonders why it took so long...every year, twice a year, the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise Company charters a big ol' luxury ship and recruits about two dozen blues, R&B, and roots-rock bands/artists to perform during a week-long cruise.
Depending on the time of year, the ships hit either the Caribbean or the coastal region known as the "Mexican Riviera." Aside from dozens of individual band performances, there are also nightly jam sessions that, sayeth the grapevine, have been known to get somewhat...ahem...rowdy.
Four performers had so much fun playing together during the October 2007 cruise that afterwards they decided to climb on a bus and carry the party cross-country.
Tommy Castro and his band, along with singer Deanna Bogart, guitarist Ronnie Baker Brooks (son of the legendary Lonnie Brooks), and harmonica maestro "Magic Dick" Salwitz, formerly of the J. Geils Band, packed it up and packed them into clubs up and down the California coast.
The best of these shows have been collected on Command Performance, the group performing together under the banner of The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue.
Offering a dynamite thirteen live songs, Command Performance divvies up the chores among the artists so that each has their time in the spotlight.
The disc kicks off with "Can't You See," a rockin' blues number from Ronnie Baker Brooks that features Bogart's impressive Jerry Lee Lewis-inspired piano pounding. Brooks' soulful vocals echo those of his father, but his red-hot six-string style is entirely his own.
Castro cranks out "I Feel That Old Feeling Coming On," a swinging song delivered in a big band blues style.
Castro exhibits his guitar prowess with a fluid solo, Magic Dick adds a bit of mouth harp, and horn players Keith Crossan, Tom Poole, and Ms. Bogart blow the cobwebs from your ears with some stinging sax solos throughout the song.
Magic Dick steps up to the plate and blows away the old J. Geils' chestnut "Wammer Jammer" with some wild harp playing while Bogart impresses with her funky "Still The Girl In The Band."
With the horn section in full-blown mode behind the rhythm, Bogart delights with her vocal gymnastics and nuanced keyboard work. Castro's "If I Had A Nickel" is a slow-paced, cryin' blues that provides the underrated guitarist with a chance to truly shine.
Brooks tackles the Muddy Waters' classic "She's Nineteen Years Old" with loads of enthusiasm. Featuring fine vocals and finely-crafted leads, Brooks takes the listener back to old Chicago.
"Tell Me Mama" is a fine showcase for Magic Dick's underrated vocals, as well as his unique approach to the mouth harp, while another J. Geils' gem, "Looking For A Love," is provided an inspired arrangement with triple-threat vocals from Castro, Bogart, and Brooks; spirited horns and harpwork; and killer solos from both guitarists.
Command Performance includes appearances by several all-star guests as well. Bluesman Curtis Salgado lends his soaring vocals and manic harpwork to "If It Ain't Me." Brooks throws in a muscular solo, and Marcia Ball and Bogart both bring the ivories up in the mix with strong playing.
A full-force jam on the steady-rolling "High On The Hog" includes amazing guitar solos from Castro and Brooks, as well as guest star Elvin Bishop; a dirty harmonica rampage courtesy of Magic Dick; and Bogart's keyboard competition with Mike Emerson riding the Hammond B3 and Deanna on piano.
The album-closing "Sea Cruise" brings guest Ball to the forefront on a romp-n-stomp early-rock classic, Ball's energetic vocals and honky-tonk piano complimented by Salgado's backing vocals and some blastin' sax notes from Bogart and Crossan.
The performance is simply exhilarating, with every musician adding to the overall abundance of joyous noise.
The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue covers all their bases with Command Performance. No matter what style of rockin' blues or raucous R&B that you crave, this collection has everything you could possibly want.
With three of the tracks (those with the guest stars) coming straight from the blues cruise jam sessions, it's the next best thing to actually riding the high seas yourself, and a great advertisement for ponying up the cash to ride along on the next Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise.
