In Turtledove's alternate reality, George S. Patton is a Confederate General. And he gets caught with his pants down in August of 1943 when the U.S. forces drop paratroopers on Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee. (The U.S. also uses troops in Confederate butternut uniforms to fool the defenders in order to gain a toehold across the Tennessee River into Chattanooga, copying an earlier Confederate ploy.) The Northern forces get the breakout they need, and General Morrell's deeper thrust into the Deep South towards Atlanta is a foregone conclusion. This book ends in the autumn of 1943, and Featherston has one last gasp of a surprise for his enemies - when the U.S. President calls for an unconditional surrender, Featherston's reply is two rockets with one-ton bombs in the warheads aimed at Philadelphia.
