On a sunny 1997 summer day in Heidelberg I stepped into Ziehank’s bookstore and as usual went straight to the shelf of books by and about Gadamer. A small red paperback with the title Gadamer Lesebuch immediately caught my eye. My friend Jean Grondin was the editor, and it was a University Paperback, UTB 1972. A round, yellow smiley face sticker on the cover announced: “For Gadamer’s 97th birthday, Feb ru ary 1997.
Special price 12 DM for three months only.” On the back was a blurb saying
that this book offered a representative selection of important writings by Gadamer on hermeneutics, ethics, aesthetics, and the history of philosophy, rounded off by a self-presentation at the beginning and a dialogue with Grondin at the end.
Looking through the contents, I immediately decided to translate it. Half the sixteen essays were not yet translated into English, and bringing them together in a single volume would offer an up-to-date anthology of Gadamer’s writings. I told Jim Risser of my plans, and he said he also was preparing to publish a collection of Gadamer’s essays in English! He gave me his projected table of contents. His collection had more essays related to Truth and Method and four selections were on practical philosophy, but it also contained many of the same selections. He generously said he would step aside if I wanted to translate the Gadamer Lesebuch, but he suggested adding a couple of essays in practical philosophy, since that was a topic of great interest in America. This would widen the coverage and make it more valuable as a textbook, so I accepted his suggestion. He generously stepped aside. On my own I added one other text, Gadamer’s last essay on Derrida and deconstruction, and voilа, you have The Gadamer Reader in English!
