What if in the late 50s, the US and the Soviet Union had selected Mars as their goal? What if the vision of writers like Heinlein, of business leading the way to space, had been realised? What if the USAF’s nuclear powered “Orion” had been built? Today Mars would no doubt be scattered with the equipment, wreckage and bodies of unlucky explorers. That is the scene in 2040 when 150 senior scientists are sent on a one-way trip to establish a permanent colony. The humans and AIs conduct dangerous research in fusion, human genetics and AI, but in the 2040s there are few things capable of astonishing a world freed of all moral constraints. Sam Aiken, in self imposed exile, rejects life in the Tube. With his quirky AI he traverses the plains of Mars, the polar caps, Valles Marineris, The Face and Olympus Mons. He becomes something of a hero but his success makes him an enemy of the Colony leadership. When disaster strikes Sam is forced to determine his own fate and that of the Colony.
