Within four years, this great empire had disintegrated; communism stood discredited. In the first instance, the Soviet Union's collapse represented the downfall of a secular religion. Communism joined the gods that had failed. Economically, moreover, the Soviet system turned out to be inefficient, unable to adapt to change.
