In this book, the term systems analyst refers to a role distinct from the business analyst; the
business analyst analyzes the business, whereas the systems analyst designs the software
solution. (Please be advised, however, that in some other usages, the systems analyst is
responsible for the analysis and modeling not only of software, but business structure and
processes as well.)
The term user task is used in its English-usage sense of “a usually assigned piece of work
often to be finished within a certain time.” It corresponds to a system use case—a unit of
work performed by an actor with the assistance of the IT system that yields a valuable result
for the initiating actor. (This is not to be confused with a technical usage of the term task
