This is not an easy thing to do, especially with a trilogy. Many authors start out well with the first novel but find they said all they had to say in the first volume. Not so here. N. K. Jemisin continues to be inventive and original in this follow up to The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. The story turns its focus from the ruling class of her wonderfully realized society to focus on the ordinary people who live in the Shadow of the upper city. Now that the gods have been freed from slavery, they begin to interact at all levels of society. Players mentioned only briefly before are brought into the story as key elements, while earlier themes continue to play out. I like these characters and care what happens to them. You will, too. The plot is well paced, characters vivid, ideas fresh, and the writing is distinctly good. Now we have only to wait until next year when the third story is published.
Highly recommended.
