This book evolved from a course in supersonic aerodynamics which the author gave during two years at the McCoy College, The Johns Hopkins University.
While the text was addressed primarily to senior graduate students in aeronautical engineering, it is suitable for any reader having some acquaintance with fluid dynamics. In particular it is hoped that the book will be of service to practicing aerodynamicists.
The author’s acquaintance with aerodynamicists in industry made him aware of what they want in order to break the confines of handbook engineering. Classroom experience convinced him that they were willing to meet squarely the mathematical ideas ,vhich must accompany any sound treatment of the subject. To slide over these mathematical principles is to render a disservice to the student. One of the principal purposes of the book, therefore, was to assemble the tools which were basic for further theoretical investigation and for the understanding of the then professional literature.
