I love those old-fashioned potboilers that were in style in the 1950s, books sort of breathless with romance and intrigue and mobsters and family secrets. Strings Attached is set during that time and it's written in the style of that time as well - and I mean that as a compliment! The heroine is a teenaged girl who longs to be a Broadway star. She has recently fled to NYC to make her own way after a romantic and family crisis. When she's struggling to survive, a mysterious man from her past comes to give her a helping hand - if only she'll do a few things for him, like keeping tabs on his son/her ex, and a few other errands. Of course, it gets much more complicated than that very quickly. Blundell piles one plot twist after another: there are abusive exes, and mistresses, and mob bosses and murder and forbidden love. The story careens back and forth in time through the Red Scare, WWII, the Korean War, Prohibition, the Great Depression. It's almost a bit much and some plot twists work better than others. The characters can be a little bit cliche sometimes, as well. But for a great old fashioned story with a fun sense of time and place, this is a really good read.
