Above all, we have written this book to help statisticians to give effective advice to researchers in microscopy. Stereology (or `quantitative microscopy') is a valuable research tool in biological science, materials science, geological science and in many technologies. It rests heavily on statistical principles, especially random sampling and sampling inference. It bears a strong resemblance to survey sampling. Like survey sampling, stereology has many traps?potential errors of methodology, such as sampling bias ? into which we may easily fall if they are not pointed out. Important scientic ndings (the structure of human liver; the structure of quenched steel; age-related deterioration of the human brain) have been overturned or cast into doubt by the discovery of stereological flaws.
