Preface
Becoming a successful entrepreneur is not only a
rewarding and self-fulfilling experience, it’s also a
tremendous amount of fun. Many people equate the
term entrepreneur with multi-millionaires running international
conglomerates. Yet traders just down the street
from where you live who make their living from retailing,
plumbing, painting and decorating, electrical installation,
building, floral arrangement, interior design, child minding,
dentistry, chiropody, garden maintenance, insurance,
image-making and a host of other things – all are
entrepreneurs, and they get as much satisfaction from
their enterprises as any multi-millionaires.
Entrepreneurship is an attitude, a whole way of life. When
you choose to start your own business you are also
choosing to become an entrepreneur, and to begin this
new way of life.
Maybe you’ve already given some thought to striking out
on your own but feel that the risks are too great, the
timing not right, the economy too bad. You feel you’d
never be able to raise the funds, you’re too young/old/
tired/retired, you’re too unemployed/redundant/rejected –
you’re too whatever.
This book aims to help you decide whether you’re right or
wrong, whether you have what it takes to strike out on
your own and stamp your personality on an enterprise of
your very own making.
Let me tell you my own story. It was a cold wet Friday
morning in November and for the last time I was walking
the short distance from the car park to my little office on
the hill. I was feeling my age, the money had almost run
out and my wife was just days away from death. Thirty
minutes later I had lost my job, my income and my car.
As I trudged through the rain looking for a taxi home I
thought, ‘You should be cracking up now.’ But I wasn’t.
Instead, I was experiencing an inner peace I’d never felt
before, coupled with a fierce determination to fight back.
And fight back I did. I also ceased to worry about
anything from that day on. It was my personal road to
Damascus, the dawn of realisation.
You will find many strands of ‘fighting back’ throughout
these pages. Regardless of your personal circumstances
this book will show you how to strike out on your own and
get your life going again.
I’ve been an entrepreneur for a long time. I’ve won some
and I’ve lost some but I wrote the first edition of this book
while I was doing it yet again so that whatever wisdom it
might contain would come fresh to the reader from
current experience. Now 14 years on, as I complete my
revisions for the fifth edition, I’m still at it: launching an
ever-increasing shoal of virtual businesses online.
The contents are not about the mechanics of running a
business. You won’t find any mention of the complexities
of the VAT system, how to compile your tax return, what
qualities you should be looking for when choosing a
solicitor or accountant. There are lots of excellent books
around dealing with these matters, including some in this
series. This book concentrates on the creative heart of
business, on how to develop an exciting enterprise from
the original germ of an idea.
If you do decide to become an entrepreneur may good
luck and good fortune be yours all the way
