Inter-service rivalry exists within the nations of all armed forces. Air arms, in particular, are often singled out by their seafaring and earthbound peers as being an expensive appendage which draws a disproportionate amount of available defence money. But nowhere in war or times of tension does this friendly rivalry melt more rapidly into open-armed co-operation than in the field of reconnaissance. Bombers never get any credit; fighter pilots are dismissed as 'glory boys', despite their work 'behind the scenes'; airlifters enjoy a brief joyful acknowledgment when they fly in the beer alongside the arms, food and medical supplies; close air supporters get a cheer when they drop the bombs on the right coordinates; but the feats of the recce people seldom go unnoticed for long, especially by the senior commanders on the ground. There is nothing soldiers hate more than the unknown, and nothing better than good quality intelligence which gives them that vital edge, known to today's mobile units as the 'force-multiplying' effect.
