5.0 out of 5 stars A POPULAR SUMMARY OF EVIDENCE FOR INTELLIGENCE IN ANIMALS, July 9, 2010 By Steven H. Propp (Sacramento, CA USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This review is from: Smarter than man?: Intelligence in whales, dolphins, and humans, (Hardcover) The authors indicate in the Foreword to this book, "By attacking the deeply rooted notion that man is the most remarkable thing God ever created, it should help us to understand that we are a part of biology. The book is propagandistic, but not in the sense that it compromises what the authors think is true or scientifically probable..." They write, "The wolf pack in the Chicago Zoo ... appear to be quite capable of some kind of birth control---the dominant female decides which of her sisters will bear litters in any given year, and the dominant male controls his subordinates. It looks as if the wolves are capable of stopping the growth curve before it stops itself for lack of space." Concerning dolphins, "Several stories concerning the teamwork of dolphins with each other have been reported by American dolphin experts.... There are also many stories of how dolphins help unconscious companions who are in danger of drowning, both in the wild state and in captivity. There is not the least doubt but that on certain occasions dolphins behave purposefully." They conclude on the note, "Even people who understand the doctrine of evolution intellectually have a hard time FEELING strongly enough that man is a part of the living earth. Man needs something to shake him to his roots, to imlpress him deeply with the fact that he does not own the earth. This something, which might give man the humility he needs, could be a greater knowledge of the other large-brained animals."
