I would not call this a fantastic romance story but it still is a very very good book. Gervase has been in excile for 10 years for something that happened when he was very young, rather a green lad and manipulated by a female neighbor and friend named Marriane. She did not apprently want to marry families choice of beau Wulf Bedowyn and managed to trap Gervase in bed with her. Naturally they are discovered by all the right people, she is ruined and so is the life of Gervase, even more complicated by a stolen broach. Gervase is exciled to the continent where he has a good life, meet interesting people but still he is bitter and angry over the life he might have had. Mostly he is still carrying much anger toward Wulf Bedowyn so when he by chance meets his 18 year old beautiful sister in Belgium right before the infamous battle of Waterloo he finds the opportunity to ruin her life and pay back his ole foe. He does not expect to find her so captivating and intelligent. So what starts out as pay back actually becomes a friendship. Morgan Bedowyn at first thinks the handsome Gervase just a rake and a scoundrel - however as he truly becomes her friend as she is dealing with the realities of battle and the horrors of war, they really and truly become friends and lovers. This is the best part of the book as others have said. When they come back to London things fall apart a bit. The rumors of the two of them are rampant in London and Gervase feels compelled to offer for Morgan. Of course Wulf thinks Gervase is beneath his sister so he sends him packing. After being found again together in an embrace at a ball Gervase offers again for Morgan. But now Morgan realizes what may have prompted Gervase's original interest and confronts him with her suspicions. Gervase does not lie, he did want to ruin her - originally - what I am sad to say - he does not explain is how deeply his feelings began to change for her. She thinks he is a scoundrel and intends to make him fall deeply in love with her then break off their sham engagement. This part of the story was a little harder for me to believe - She kept wanting him to forgive his father, forgive Marianne, forgive his cousing and yet she kept not being able to trust or to forgive Gervase. Some how I think the end could have been improved on but still this was mostly a story about deep hurts and forgiveness and friendship - mostly it was a good read!
