I loved Who By Fire, but was concerned I would be let down by Skinny. With the title Skinny, I was also concerned that this book would not appeal to adult males. I was pleasantly surprised. The characters in this book are so deeply flawed and the book is fascinating as a study in personality disorders and body image issues. The plot itself was also compelling. I started the book at the beginning of a cross-country flight. By the time I landed, I was finished. I rarely say this about novels, but I really feel that this book has something for everyone. Sex? Check. Character development? Check. A plot that keeps you guessing up to the very last page? Check. Humor? Check. Characters you can identify with as they struggle with their body images, depression, narcissistic tendencies, personality disorders, guilt, and regret? Check. I am really glad Spechler avoided the sophomore slump and put out another novel I can recommend to my friends and family.
