So far as I am concerned Jim Butcher can do no wrong. He is a talented writer, and in this collection of short stories more of the character of Harry Dresden is revealed to us. He appears to be maturing in a rather alarming but inevitable manner, his wizardry grows stronger as he meets more and more formidable foes, and he is somewhat overpowering to other people. The character of Murphy, the female cop who is his good friend and got him started on helping the people of Chicago as a P.I. sort of wizard, is also developing. This is particularly noticeable in the last short story, "Aftermath," which is the followup on the last chapter of the novel "Changes." Dresden is shot, falls into the lake and seems to vanish. The werewolves and Murphy steel themselves to take over the protection of Chicago. So, Dresden is bound for his godmother and assuming the title of the Winter Knight, which could be a very long appointment indeed, and a new foe, the fomor, have been attacking Chicago. But Murphy and the werewolves, in a good stiff battle defeat them; and have other strong friends, a Valkyrie, whom I for one would never under-estimate, Ebenezer, Harry's grandfather, and a couple of other wizards; Thomas, Harry's halfbrother; and I would not eliminate John Marcone (whom I have always thought was not that bad).
