Acatl, a Priest of the Dead, is called in to use his skills to investigate a strange disappearance. One of the Priestesses is missing and her room is covered in blood. Acatl's own brother stands accused and his trial is being rushed for political purposes. Acatl is convinced that the woman is still alive, but how long she will remain so is the bigger question. And as Acatl digs deeper, he finds that there are many with motive for the crime.
I quite enjoyed Aliette de Bodard's debut novel. The blending of fantasy, history, and mystery made for a great read with what I consider to be strong cross-genre appeal. De Bodard creates a fascinating setting, drawing on the history and belief system of the Aztecs and incorporating magic into what is essentially a classic whodunit. A unique read and, in my opinion, the start to a fascinating new series.
